Yesa master BMS function with HEV ECU

2026-09-29

Hello Yesa, on CAN bus communication issue in Hev how your Master BMS spoofs or translates signals so the OEM ECU stays happy?

Yes, this is often the real engineer bottleneck.

The short answer is that a Master BMS doesn't "spoof" in the sense of sending fake data blindly. It “intercepts” the OEM ECU's queries and “translates” the lithium pack's real data into the exact format and timing the ECU expects from a NiMH battery. It's a protocol converter, not a signal generator.

Why Translation Is Necessary?

The OEM ECU in a Toyota HEV is programmed to talk to a NiMH battery. It expects a specific set of messages on the CAN bus—voltage, current, state of charge (SOC), temperature, and internal resistance—at a specific rate and with specific scaling. A lithium pack's BMS speaks a different "dialect." If you just connect it, the ECU either gets nothing it understands or gets data that falls outside its expected range, triggering fault codes (like P0A80) or entering limp mode .

How does the Master BMS Act as a Translator?

The Master BMS sits between the lithium cells and the vehicle's CAN bus. Its job is to listen, interpret, and respond in a way the OEM ECU finds acceptable.

1.Message Interception and Reformatting**: It reads the CAN frames broadcast by the OEM ECU and other vehicle modules. It then takes the raw data from its own lithium sensors and repackages it into the exact CAN IDs, byte layouts, and scaling factors that the OEM ECU expects for a NiMH pack . For instance, the BMS Plus 2 for the Prius is described as a computer that "intercepts the CAN signals from the OE BMS ECU and alters them" .

2.Managing the "SOC" Narrative**: This is often the most critical translation. NiMH and lithium have very different voltage-to-SOC curves. A lithium cell holds a relatively flat voltage until it's nearly empty. If the BMS reported the true lithium voltage, the ECU might think the battery is still nearly full when it's actually low. The Master BMS calculates a **reported SOC** that follows the ECU's expected NiMH behavior, even if it doesn't match the lithium cell's actual state. This prevents the ECU from making incorrect decisions about when to start the engine or limit assist .

3.Preventing Overcharge Signals**: The OEM charger will keep pushing current as long as the ECU thinks the NiMH battery can accept it. The Master BMS monitors the true lithium voltage. When it detects that the cells are approaching a safe maximum, it can signal the ECU (via the translated data) that the battery is "full," telling the charger to stop or taper the current, even though the lithium pack might technically have more room. This is a key safety function that prevents the thermal runaway risk you mentioned earlier .

The Real Engineering Challenge: Timing and Integrity

Making this work flawlessly is harder than just sending the right bytes. The OEM ECU is a real-time system. If it sends a request for battery data and doesn't get a response within a tight window (often just a few milliseconds), it will log a communication fault. A successful Master BMS must not just translate the data, but also **meet the strict timing requirements** of the CAN bus .

Furthermore, the CAN protocol itself has no built-in security or authentication . This is a double-edged sword: it makes spoofing/translation possible, but it also means the ECU has no way to verify the data's authenticity. It trusts what it receives as long as the format and timing are correct.

Summary

The Master BMS works by **masking the lithium battery's true nature**. It presents a carefully crafted, NiMH compatible data stream to the OEM ECU, while independently managing the lithium cells for safety and longevity. It's not deception for deception's sake—it's a necessary compatibility layer that allows modern lithium chemistry to function within a legacy control system designed for a completely different technology.
