Massive fire & explosion in a battery factory in Azuqueca de Henares, Spain

2025-07-10

On July 4, 2027, a factory located in an industrial zone about 50 kilometers northeast of Madrid was hit by several explosions that ignited a large fire. Firefighters were still fighting the blaze on the 6th. The cause of the explosions remains unknown. Due to the release of toxic smoke from the fire, the local government sent alerts to approximately 60,000 residents in five surrounding communities via mobile phones, advising them not to go outside, keep windows and doors closed, and turn off air conditioners. Videos posted online showed a large black plume of smoke rising above the burning building.

A local official said on Jul. 6 p.m. the smoke had begun to rise vertically and no longer posed a threat to the surrounding area, and the alert was lifted.

The recycling of lithium batteries requires high-temperature pyrolysis. If the temperature is not properly controlled (such as rising too quickly), the electrolyte may decompose to produce flammable gases like hydrogen and methane, as well as highly toxic hydrogen fluoride (HF), which can easily cause explosions. The Spanish Association of Environmental Technology pointed out that in Spain only 15% of the country's recycling plants are equipped with automated sorting systems, 30% rely on manual operations, and the penetration rate of safety protection equipment (such as real-time gas monitoring and inert gas protection) is low. In April 2025, an explosion at a battery factory in Girona, Catalonia, killed one person and seriously injured another. The investigation pointed to "loss of control of the pyrolysis process."

Yesa Battery is using the most safe material to produce our product: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) which is developed into a mature stage with stable chemical and physics performance. You can always trust our product that in no circumstance the battery will fire or explode like this fire in Spain if properly used per manual.
