Hello Yesa, does the HEV hybrid system require a large battery?

2026-04-16

This is a typical "appeal to popularity"logical fallacy: Since the inception of Hev, they have all had small batteries. Therefore, people take the common occurrence at face value and mistakenly believe that HEV must have small batteries. In fact, being common and being reasonable are two different things.

HEV uses 1-2 small batteries. This was mainly due to the limitations of the Toyota fuel vehicle architecture and the high cost of batteries in the early stages. The inability to fit large batteries in the vehicle body is the "cause", while the hybrid control strategy based on small batteries is the "result".

If HEV uses a 4-8 kWh large battery, it is a demand for technological upgrade. Today, there are already available plug-in dedicated vehicle bodies, and large battery HEVs will soon be available.

Advantages of the Large-Capacity Battery HEV
  • Overturn the classic control strategy of frequent start-stop in hybrid electric vehicles, eliminating energy waste and NVH issues caused by start-stop.
  • 🎯 High maneuvering margin, enabling AI energy management to fully exert its power.
  • 🔋 Comparable to PHEV in terms of kinetic energy recovery capability and parking power supply capability.

The large-capacity HEV product also has an "unreasonable" question: Since it cannot be plugged in externally, how can the large battery be charged?

💡 The Answer

In most operating conditions, even during high-speed cruising, the engine's power will be slightly higher than the power required at the wheels. The remaining power will be stored in the battery.

In a small battery hybrid vehicle, during the engine startup, it is also charging slowly for most of the time. However, due to its small capacity, it cannot charge for too long before having to shut down and switch to the EV mode for discharging.

So for HEVs that cannot be charged externally at temperatures ranging from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, "where does the electricity come from?" has an answer. Returning to advantage 2: the large battery capacity provides ample room for maneuver and enables the full application of AI energy management. We will discuss this in our next blog.
